Dr. Hartert’s research focuses on identifying modifiable environmental factors as well as genetic factors that predispose individuals to atopic diseases with the goal of improving outcomes.  In her R01 grant, “Dietary Antioxidants and Incidence of Adult-Onset Asthma,” she tests the hypothesis that dietary antioxidants play a role in the development of asthma, particularly in persons with a family history of atopic disease.  Dr. Hartert is studying the relationship between urinary F2-isoprostanes, as a measure of oxidative stress, and incident asthma, as well as the relationship between serum antioxidants and incident asthma. In addition, she is accruing and studying one of the largest cohorts of mother-infant dyads with bronchiolitis, investigating the etiologic contribution of second-hand smoke exposure to the development and severity of bronchiolitis and asthma. Dr. Hartert and Vanderbilt clinical research scholar Kecia Caroll, M.D., defined racial differences in asthma-related morbidity among 100,000 women.
